3 Reasons Why The New YuGiOh YCS Top 16 Change In The TCG is Good

YuGiOh Championship Series YCS Card Game LogoKonami just released the news there will be a major change to the top 16 cut in YCS Atlanta. This is really big news since this will change not just the YCS game play, but how we all will be playing YuGi’s!!

Here is what Konami announced:

Starting with the YCS in Atlanta, GA on January 31st – February 2nd, we are changing the way the Top 16 works for YCS events held in the Americas.

Instead of the normal Advanced Constructed Format, we will now have the Top 16 Duelists draft their Top 16 decks, and compete in Booster Draft format, using the Brand New War of the Giants – Round 2.

This will challenge our Top Duelists, measure their skill at the game in the broadest possible sense, and give them a new play experience that’s different from the previous double digit rounds played that weekend before the Top 16. We want our YCS champions to be the best of the best, and true masters of EVERY aspect of the game.

Specifics on how to draft War of the Giants – Round 2 can be found here.

The exact details on how the YCS Top 16 will work it will be posted on the YCS Atlanta FAQ in the next couple of weeks.

I actually like this change for several reasons. Many of these reason are the side effects this change will have on our locals. Here are my reasons:

  1. More Creative Deck Building and Less Net Decking Top / Winning Decks
If you are like me, you can’t wait to see the deck profile / list of the latest YCS champion deck. We want to see what is the new deck or new tech being used. This type of information is the type we all want to use at our locals. But if we don’t have a winning deck to look at we will have to do our own homework. Meaning we will have to become more creative in the decks we build and actually do the hard word of finding those gem cards to use. No longer can we just copy off someones hard work and get good results.

  2. Cheaper Card Prices
Since there will no longer be a winning deck, our current price structure for cards should change too. Currently there is a high demand for the cards within the current winning deck. I know the price of Mecha Phantom Beast Dracossack has dropped but it still demands a high price. This is due to it being a card that is within the top/winning deck. Now image life without this winning deck. No one can say this deck is better than that deck. Thus the demand for key cards will drop since no one can say, “This is the best deck! You need to have these cards!”

  3. Less Mirror Matches and More Fun
Who really likes to play the mirror match? I do every now and them. But not all the time. With no top deck to copy from, there will be less mirror matches. Since we will now need to be creative and come up with our own deck ideas, we will see less mirror matches. This means more fun playing the game. Since you will not know what your opponent may be playing you will now need to be more carefull with your plays. Meaning more thinking and more fun strategy.

Konami made a win win situation. They win since the people who will be attending YCS’s will now buy packs of War of the Giants – Round 2 in order to practice. These people will want to know everything thing they can about the set. Such as:

  • What is the ratio of good cards compared to bad cards within a pack
  • What cards in the set work together to make game changing combos
  • What cards they should always pick. Even better, what card never to pick

We win cause of the side effects this change will have on our locals. More Creative Deck Building and Less Net Decking Top / Winning Decks, Cheaper Card Prices and Less Mirror Matches and More Fun. As I said before I really like these changes and can’t wait to see if what I predict will happen.
