Billy Brake 2011 YCS Ohio Winner Tour Guide Plant Synchro Deck Review

Maxx C YuGiOh Card Game So it’s final, “The Deck To Beat” in this new format is Tour Guide Plants. I actually thought Dark World was going to be the deck. But as you can see from the finals, plants still have the staying power. Both 1st and 2nd place decks were Tour Guide Plants.

WOW!!!! We can say Billy Brake is a back-to-back YCS champion. Congrats to 2 time YCS winner, Billy Brake, for his dominating a field of over 1000 people with his innovative plant deck. He had an epic battle in the finals against the mirror match. That just shows you that Billy is a very talented and skilled player. If things go right we might see a 3-peat.

As before, he was able to control his opponets plays by main decking in hand monster effect monsters. Which in turn made his opponets think about what they want to do. Since he was playing an almost identical deck he played in YCS Toronto, his opponents should have been ready for them.

They should have been ready to see main deck Effect Veiler and Maxx C. What most likely surprised them was the number of these cards he ran. You see he actually expected to play against many Dark World decks. So he decided to take out 1 Effect Veiler and added the 3rd Maxx C.

He realized Dark Worlds do a lot of special summoning from their discard effects. Why not get some cards back to his hand by sending Maxx C in responce to their discard effects. You see, by playing this card Billy was able to say to his opponent, “Go ahead and do all those special summons. I’m just going to draw a card for each one of them.” He basically dared his opponent to special summon more than 1 monster.

With decks running Tour Guide From the Underworld, The Agent of Creation – Venus, and now Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World, they now had to think if they will continue to special summon their Dark Worlds or even into their Xyz monster. Imagine being able to make your opponent think about not summoning their Gachi Gachi Gantetsu or Dark World monsters. Now that’s power!!!

What I found still amazing is that he ran the limited plant engine of only 1 Lonefire Blossom, 1 Debris Dragon and 1 Pot of Avarice. Being able to get one of your plant tuners, Glow-Up Bulb or spore, from your deck to the graveyard is key to this deck. This allowed him to special summon it to the field and then use his tool box of an extra deck. Can you say more control?

Since he did so well last YCS, he kept the a low trap count. He even removed one trap to make room to add an additional control monster, Caius The Shadow Monarch. This made his opponents Heavy Storm that much more useless. He still decided to run 13 spell cards. 2 of which allowed him to control the field, Enemy Controller. Funny how this card has the word contol in it. :)

Where you will the major changes he did was in his side deck. He played cards that would punish his opponents for playing Dark Worlds. He expected to play against Dark Worlds. Funny thing is that he really didn’t play to many of them. But at least he was prepared for them.

Check out Billy’s entire updated deck plus his side and extra deck below his back-to-back trophy shot.

[...] After a grueling 2 days of playing, the players at KC have decided who will be the YCS Championship Deck. And the winner and NEW championship deck of the YCS is Chaaaaaaaaaaaaos Stunnnnnnnnnnnn! So we finally have a deck that has taken down the reigning YCS Champion deck, Tour Guide Plant Synchron. [...] I decided to just play Billy Brake’s Plant Syncro deck. I already played the deck at the beginning of the format, and felt confident that I could do well [...]

[...] Billy Brake’s skill set varies greatly from that of Alistar Albans, even though both are top-ten tournament players. There is, however, some overlap in what the best players do well; and there is one attribute that can be found in every world-class player’s game. They’re all willing to make plays that typical players wouldn’t even consider. [...]
