So did anyone really think some other deck was going to win? Hello!! There’s a reason why majority of the players were running this deck. Dragon Ruler decks just win!!! They can make game changing. Um excuse me, I mean game ending plays out of no where! I’m sure they are going to get hit on the January 1st ban list.

Congrats to 1st time YCS winner, Merlin Schumacher (such a magical name Merlin), for his dominating a field of over 800+ people with his agressive and dominating deck. He had an epic battle in the finals against Dragon Ruler. Being able to make it to the finals in a format that had so many mirror matches in the top 32 shows that Merlin is a very talented and skilled player. And to make him more interesting, he’s from Germany and this was his first YCS.
I’m really not surprised to see this deck win. What did surprise me was some of the cards he removed and replaced with tech cards. He thought about what he expected to play through out the tournament. Mirror Matches!!! So he took out cards that would not help him in the mirror and added cards that would. He took out a card that I assumed was a staple in all decks, Book of Moon. I can see why he removed it. It does nothing against the mirror match. You may be able to put a monster face down, but the dragon deck can just bring out another dragon and another dragon. It also was in the deck to deal with Evilswarm Ophion. Which I’m assuming he felt was not going to be played by many. He assumed right!!!
Since he was expecting to play a lot of mirror matches he played with 3 Maxx C. This is not usually what you would see in a dragon deck, but it sure does help a lot in the mirror. He also teched in a Fog King. This is basically a free level seven monster water monster. Free and water are the key words here. You see it can be used to help make rank 7 Xyz monsters. But more specific it can make a rank 7 water Xyz. As in Mermail Abyssgaios. This is an amazing card to play in the mirror. Can you say, “I’m controlling what you can do. Oh I should be wining this game real soon!”
What really surprised me was he was not playing any Vanity’s Emptiness. Not main or even in his side deck. NONE!! Instead he played this new card, Castle of Dragon Souls. This card helped him thin out his deck since he more than likely banished a ruler. Getting the additional 700 attack points helps get over those 3000 defense monsters. There are a lot of tricks you can do with this card. Look out for an article about it in the future.
Over all I like his tech choices and removals. I’m not sure if I would play this version at my locals since not many players ply dragon ruler. So I most likely will not be playing a lot of mirror matches. But if you feel you are going to play the mirror a lot, give it a try.
