As I have been saying in past arcticles, I’m loving this format. There is no supreme deck that has taken over the format. As with past YCS’s there is a new deck winning, Gravekeeper’s. It was such a dominating deck in this tournament that it took not just the top spot but also 2nd and 3rd too.
Congrats to 1st time YCS winner, Frazier Smith, for his dominating a field of over 800 people with his gravekeeper’s deck. He along with his friends, 2nd and 3rd place winners, came a up with a very aniti meta version of gravekeeper’s. With the latest starstrike blast gravekeeper, Gravekeeper’s Recruiter, they were able to do thinks gravekeeper players have been wanting to do for years.
Frazier’s deck list has many interactive cards that once played got him many +1′s and sometime +2′s and +3s. Getting so many pluses and playing many defensive cards to protect the card advantage, you can see why this deck was the top deck. It had answers to many of the top played and expected decks, plant synchron, x-saber and blackwings.
We all know the main creature to any gravekeeper’s deck is Gravekeeper’s Spy. Her importants to the deck is unbelieveable. She has a big defensive butt, 2000 with a possible 500 increase, but can get you any of the other monsters from your deck to the field for FREE! Flip her over and get a Gravekeeper’s Descendant. Then use the same spy that got you the descendant to tribute and remove any card on the field. Now that is controling power.
Add in Gravekeeper’s Recruiter and you can now search again to get any monster, except spy, from your deck to your hand. Getting so many free searches is like taking extra turns. Since the only way you draw a card is in the beginging of your turn, every time you are able to get a card from your deck to your hand or field is similar to your draw phase. Having 6 monster cards that get you extra turns is not bad.
The main spell card that puts all those graveyard dependent decks in their place is the mighty Necrovalley. This card just puts plant synchron and x-sabers on lock down. No more let me do this and get that with my graveyard. Necrovalley says STOP THAT! It also give your somewhat weaker gravekeeper’s a 500 attack and defense boost. Now those 1600 attack monsters just to 2100 attackers and making those 2000 defense spy’s to 2500 defense. Now baby got back that can hold off most syncro monsters. Necrovalley is the gravekeeper’s steroid.
Another super power card is mighty Royal Tribute. This one card can strip many players hand in one single play, especially if you are going first. Image this play, you discard commadant to get necrovalley from your deck. Then you play necrovalley and set your spells, traps and monster. Now play royal tribute. You just set up your field and removed all your oppenents creatures to the grave. The other beauty of this card is the let me see your hand part. So you know what spells and traps they are holding. Nowing that information is key to victory.
Add in the already powerful drawing engine of Pot of Duality. You should already know why this card is just amazing. This card allowed Frazier to not have to run 3 copies of Necrovalley and also got him a card he could use right now. As we all know getting the right card at the right time is always getting us closer to a win.
All of his trap cards are defensive traps. Meaning, I don’t want you to be able to do certain things. Want to summon a creature? Nope I have Bottomless Trap Hole, Solemn Judgment and Solemn Warning to stop that. Oh man you all ready have a creature on the field and you are attacking, I got Mirror Force, Dimensional Prison and Compulsory Evacuation Device. You want to destroy more than one of my cards on the field, I got that covered too with Starlight Road.
With all those FREE turns, garveyard negation and powerful trap cards. You can see why this deck won the top 3 spots of YCS Atlanta. Also this deck was not on many peoples radar, thus not having any side deck cards to spot it. Good call on all those Philly players that topped. I’m sure we are all going to see this deck being played at out locals and regionals.
